Understanding the Cost of Custom ID Hologram Overlays

We often receive inquiries like: “Can I order just one or two rolls of holographic overlay with my custom design?”

When faced with such questions, we always take the time to explain that Image Technology is a manufacturing company specializing in custom ID security solutions, and most of our clients require personalized anti-counterfeit designs.

If you’re in the initial testing phase and want to try a custom design, we’re happy to support a small-quantity sample making. However, if the entire order only consists of one or two rolls, we’d like to share some important points about the limitations and cost structure of small-batch customization.

We Focus on Customization, Not Stock Supply

Our company (Image Technology) has over 20 years of experience in optical security, with more than a decade focused specifically on ID document security protection. Our clients include corporations, government institutions, and national projects involving driver’s licenses, ID cards, and more.

Roughly 90% of the projects we handle are custom-based. That’s why we’ve built a full in-house team for design, photolithography, and optical embossing production. Our goal is to provide hologram overlays that are secure, unique, and tailor-made for each client’s needs.

As a result, we don’t offer ready-made stock designs. We produce custom hologram overlays according to specific project requirements.

Why We Don’t Recommend Small-Batch Custom Orders

Some clients ask: “My project is small—can’t I just order one roll (enough for 500–1000 cards) with a custom pattern?” We understand your needs and are more than willing to help. But here’s why ultra-small orders aren’t a good fit for fully custom hologram overlays:

  • Custom designs require mold making, which involves significant cost, often several thousand USD per mold.
  • Our overlays use high-resolution photolithography, embedding features like dynamic color shifts, microtext, hidden images, and more—all tailored to your security requirements.
  • Once a mold is ready, we need to install, test, and fine-tune production equipment. This process results in material loss.
  • The embossing machine typically runs in kilometer-scale batches. Even if you only need one roll, the operational cost remains close to that of mass production.

So, we’re not rejecting small-volume orders—we simply want you to understand that the cost per unit becomes disproportionately high due to the complex process involved.

Our Recommendation

If your project only requires basic visual appeal and standard security, we recommend choosing from our pre-designed general-purpose holographic overlays. These offer good protection and cost-efficiency.

If your project involves government or institutional ID cards that require strict anti-counterfeit protection and a unique design, then full customization is the right path.

In Summary

We don’t impose a “minimum order quantity” just for the sake of it. Instead, we aim to help clients understand the true cost structure of custom ID hologram overlays.

Small-quantity orders are generally not compatible with this kind of high-standard, highly customized anti-counterfeit solution, as the unit cost becomes unreasonably high.

That’s why we always aim to help you find a solution that best suits your project, not only in terms of security and performance, but also in cost-effectiveness.

Whether it’s a custom design or a ready-made pattern, our goal is to offer you the most practical and thoughtful option for your needs. For more guidance, feel free to contact us—we’re happy to discuss the best solution for your needs.
