Professional Secure ID Card Production Solution – Optical Lamination by IMAGE TECH

In today’s world, where identity verification and data security are increasingly critical, the anti-counterfeiting technology of ID cards is essential. It not only protects sensitive information but also extends the lifespan and security level of the card.

Common protection methods include personalized printing, chip data tracking, and optical security overlays.

This article introduces Image Technology’s optical security overlays, designed to provide higher-level protection and enhance the durability of ID cards.

Two Main Security Options for Standard ID Cards

Image Technology (Image Tech) offers two core security solutions for ID cards and similar credentials, each tailored to different usage scenarios and security requirements.

1. ID Hologram Lamination Pouch

Also known as optical laminating pouch film, this method uses a thermal pouch laminator to seal a Teslin security card together with an optical lamination pouch under heat and pressure.
It effectively prevents tampering, fading and provides waterproof protection of personalized information, allowing long-term storage and other advantages.

  • Standard thicknesses: 175μm, 225μm, 250μm
  • Design options: Generic patterns or fully customized optical effects
  • Applications: Large-scale events and summit credentials, such as the Olympic Games, Asian Games, and international forums

This is a mature, user-friendly solution ideal for temporary badges and event credentials.

2. ID Card Overlay Films

Unlike lamination pouches, ID card overlay films are thin optical security layers applied by embedding, transferring, or surface laminating onto the card.

They are widely used for long-term credentials, such as national ID cards, social security cards, driver’s licenses, and employee ID badges.

(1) Embedded Lamination Overlays

  • Material options: PVC, PETG, or PC (PVC is common in domestic markets, while PC is widely used internationally)
  • Standard thickness: 50–75μm
  • Usage: Typically applied locally on the card; for full-face coverage, transfer film is recommended to ensure better adhesion
  • Applications: Ideal for high-volume card production at card manufacturing facilities

(2) Heat Transfer Films

  • Standard thickness: 21μm
  • Advantages: Flexible and easy to use, requires only a card laminator to apply the optical security layer
  • Key benefit: Supports full edge-to-edge coverage, making it ideal for decentralized or temporary card issuance

(3) Optical Patch Laminate Film

  • Standard thickness: 25μm (1 mil)
  • Structure: Dual-layer film; after lamination, the base film peels away, leaving only the durable optical layer on the card surface
  • Benefit: More scratch- and wear-resistant compared to heat transfer films, suitable for high-frequency card usage
